Automatic Ventilation

Automatic Pneumatic Ventilators

Intubation_pictureThe CAREvent ® Handheld Resuscitators are lightweight, portable, extremely durable and simple to use automatic time/volume cycled devices. They are completely pneumatic (i.e. no batteries required) and once set, deliver breath by breath consistency in delivered tidal volume, frequency, inspiratory/expiratory times and flow rates. This consistent ventilation is not achievable with a standard bag-valve-mask and prevents the delivery of excessive ventilation.

Head-HarnessThe 2005 AHA & ERC Guidelines highlighted that CPR is not performed well. From a ventilation stand point, too many breaths are delivered with too much force and in too large a volume. This excessive ventilation causes gastric inflation during BLS-CPR and when an advanced airway is used, it leads to decreased cerebral perfusion.

Replacing bag-valve-masks with a CAREvent® Hand Held Resuscitator, takes the guesswork out of how hard and often a “bag” should be squeezed. They deliver ventilation automatically freeing rescuer’s hands to focus on other patient needs rather than their own bagging performance.

There are five CAREvent® Handheld models to meet the varying needs for simplicity, functionality and budgets. Two versions of each model are now available to meet either the 2005 Guideline recommendations for lower tidal volumes/frequencies or the Guidelines from 2000.

Features available include:

  • “Demand Breathing” for the spontaneously breathing patient (CAREvent® ALS and CA).
  • Manual Ventilation Override to supplement the automatic ventilation mode (CAREvent® ALS, EMT, CA).
  • Single Slider Control with 6 settings for the simultaneous adjustment of ventilation frequency and tidal volume (CAREvent® ALS, and EMT).
  • Delayed Cycling of 20 seconds when pressing the manual button after an automatic breath to provide enough time for 30 chest compressions.
  • Auto Cycling Shut-Off and Restart for patients moving in and out of spontaneous breathing (CAREvent® ALS, CA). Note: In the child settings the inspired flow rate of the patient may be insufficient to cause the Automatic Circuit Shutoff to function.
  • Bleed Flow on the CAREvent® CA designed to reduce the risk of entraining outside air into the device in toxic environments.
  • CAREvent® Ventilators

The CAREvent® Automatic Transport Ventilators are lightweight, portable, durable and simple to use, control module style, automatic time/volume cycled ventilators. They are completely pneumatic (no batteries required) and deliver breath by breath consistency in delivered tidal volume, frequency, inspiratory/expiratory times and flow rates. This consistency is not achievable with a bag-valve-mask resuscitator and prevents gastric inflation and high intrathoracic pressure. Designed primarily for the demands of emergency rescue, resuscitation and critical care patient transports, the CAREvent® ventilators provide functionality normally only found in high end electronic ventilators. Four models are available to meet the various functionality and budgetary needs. Features available include:
    • "Demand Breathing" for the spontaneously breathing patient
    • Manual Override Ventilation to supplement automatic ventilations if required and activate delayed cycling when a 30:2 CPR protocol is being performed.
    • Flexibility in breath volume and frequency delivery to ventilate patients from 5 kg. to large adults (note ALS+ suitable for patients from 15 kg.)
    • CPAP to provide non-invasive treatment for patients with CHF, COPD and PE. This provides one space saving device for oxygen therapy, CPAP treatment, resuscitation and ventilation (ALS+, ATV+ and MRI).
    • Auto Cycling Shut-Off and Re-Start to synchronized ventilation for patients moving in and out of respiratory arrest. Note: In the child settings the inspired flow rate of the patient may be insufficient to cause the Automatic Circuit Shut off to function.
    • Airway Pressure Gauge to provide visual monitoring of the patient and ventilator settings.
    • An Audible and Visual Low Gas Supply Warning.
    • Audible and Visual Indicator for a circuit disconnect or when delivered tidal volumes are insufficient (ATV+ and MRI)

  • CAREvent ALS

The O-Two CAREvent® ALS handheld automatic transport resuscitator provide trained individuals with a safe and effective means of providing artificial ventilation during respiratory and/or cardiac arrest.

These pneumatically powered, time/volume cycled resuscitators have the added feature of a manually actuated, automatic ventilation override button (manual button). The single slider control for the simultaneous adjustment of ventilation frequency and tidal volume has six, preset automatic and manual override settings for a range of patients from 20 kg body weight to large adults. An off position is provided so that they can be left attached to the gas supply with the supply turned on ready for immediate use. No electrical supply or batteries are required to operate the devices.

During mask-ventilated CPR, the first breath is delivered automatically followed by a manually actuated breath. This inhibits the automatic cycling for 20 seconds, allowing the rescuer to provide the 30 chest compressions recommended by the current guidelines for resuscitation. If the manual button is not depressed again the automatic cycling will re-start at the selected rate and volume.

Each resuscitator comes equipped with a gurney clip that allows the resuscitator to be attached to the handrail of the hospital gurney or ambulance stretcher.

The patient is protected from barotrauma due to over inflation by the audible, pressure relief system. This warns the operator of airway obstruction or airway restrictions. The excess delivered volume is discharged to atmosphere.

The O-Two CAREvent® ALS handheld automatic transport resuscitator has the added advantage of synchronized intermittent mandatory ventilation (SIMV). This allows spontaneously breathing patients to demand breathe through the resuscitator on 100% oxygen, at their own desired rate and volume. Their inspiratory efforts will stop automatic cycling. Should the patient stop breathing, or their volume fall below the preset threshold the resuscitator will restart automatically at the selected rate and volume.

Handheld, lightweight, portable, simple to use and extremely durable, the O-Two CAREvent® ALS handheld automatic transport resuscitators are specifically designed for the demands of the emergency resuscitation and rescue environment.

Accessories available for the O-Two CAREvent® ALS handheld automatic transport resuscitator include standard and deluxe transport ventilator circuits with positive-end expiratory pressure (PEEP) ports.

    Accessories for CAREvent® ALS

  • CAREvent CA

The threat of a chemical-agent release in a crowded area has presented new challenges over the last few years. This environment is as dangerous as that which may be encountered during confined space entry in the industrial setting in atmospheres that are Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health (IDLH). The O-Two CAREvent® CA chemical agent resuscitation environment ventilator has been developed to meet these challenges.

The O-Two CAREvent® CA has only one external control. The chemical agent and IDLH environments are considered to be so hazardous that the less the rescuer has to do to ventilate the patient, the quicker the patent can be resuscitated and the greater the chance for the patient’s survival. With the O-Two CAREvent® CA, all that is required is to turn on the oxygen/air supply, apply the mask to the patient’s face and secure the airway. The O-Two CAREvent® CA will provide automatic ventilation to the non-breathing patient at a rate and volume designed to provide adequate oxygenation while reducing the risk of gastric insufflation, in accordance with the current guidelines for resuscitation.

The micro-pneumatic circuitry of the O-Two CAREvent® CA requires no batteries or electrical supply to operate. Should the patient start spontaneous breathing, the demand breathing feature of the O-Two CAREvent® CA allows the patient to breathe at his or her own rate and volume. The patient’s inspiratory effort (if adequate) will also cause the automatic circuit shut-off to stop the automatic cycling of the ventilator, allowing the patient to breathe at her or his own rate and volume. If the patient stops breathing again, the automatic cycling will restart with no action required by the rescuer.

A manual override button is provided on the O-Two CAREvent® CA to allow for the provision of two breaths followed by 30 chest compressions during CPR in accordance with the current resuscitation guidelines. In addition, it can also be used to supplement spontaneous ventilations if required. An additional feature of the O-Two CAREvent® CA is the two L/min mask purge, bleed flow. This reduces the risk of the patient drawing in toxic ambient air into the mask should a leak occur in the mask-to-face seal. By combining this simplicity of operation with technological sophistication, the O-Two CAREvent® CA provides trained individuals with a safe and effective means of maintaining artificial ventilation during respiratory arrest, which may occur during confined space entry or a toxic chemical agent release.

Accessories available for the O-Two CAREvent® CA include the head harness system, which assists in maintaining a mask-to-face seal during extrication and transport and to provide hands-free operation.

Also are available are the deluxe transport ventilator circuit with positive-end expiratory pressure (PEEP) port and the gurney clip, which allows the device to be attached to the handrail of the gurney or emergency stretcher during transport.
